Porcelain Jewelry Workshop

4 week porcelain jewelry mini-series at Railyard Arts Studio in Croton Falls, NY

Discover the joy of making porcelain jewelry in this 4 week mini-series. Perfect for beginners and experienced ceramists alike, this mini-series provides a great opportunity to get creative on a small scale. Students will learn the basic techniques for making porcelain earrings, pendants, and other wearable accessories from design to completion. Forming, refining, glazing, and finishing will all be demonstrated and discussed. Finally, students will be assisted in solving design challenges and bringing their pieces to life through completion.

Techniques:

• Handbuilding with porcelain slabs, cutting shapes, adding texture

• How to refine, store, and properly dry pieces

• How to work with pliers and high-fire wire to build a solid foundation for connecting parts and pieces

• How to decorate pieces through surface design techniques such as slip trailing, incising, stamping, and underglazes

• Introduction on how to use epoxies and findings to finish your pieces

Students are responsible for purchasing their own findings for finishing their pieces such as cording, chain, ear wires, posts and backs, etc.

Luxurious Luster Workshop

In this 3 hour luster workshop students will learn the basics of applying Gold, Silver, and Mother-of-Pearl lusters to bring a magical sparkle and luscious shine to their finished pieces. The focus will be on application techniques, design considerations, and placement options based on form and decoration. Discussions will include, safety, surface finishes, application, brushes and cleaning methods, as well as a brief discussion of firing process.

Each student should bring 3-5 glazed finished works or 6-10 ceramic jewelry pieces (Cone 6-10) to test application techniques and placement on. Glossy surfaces will yield shiny results, while matte or raw clay surfaces will yield a more subtle dull matte finish. Mother-of-pearl is best applied over glossy glaze surfaces.

This workshop will be held outdoors. but students will be required to wear a respirator.

Adorned: Ceramic Jewelry Basics

Feb 8, 15, & 22 (3 week workshop)

In this special topic course with CAC Artist, Jess Palmer, students will learn to form and cut their own clay pendants, beads and baubles, to create unique ceramic jewelry for necklaces and earrings. The basics including; rolling, forming, hole cutting, and drying will be discussed. Elements of design will be touched upon. Firing methods, wire types, and technical issues will also be introduced.
